Mandatory private pension system funds have secured some 4.1 million subscribers, exceeding previous estimates of 3.7 million, according to the National House for Pensions and Social Insurances (CNPAS). This increase is due to an acceleration of the subscription process in the last week of the campaign to join a pension fund.
Employees under the age of 35 were compelled to subscribe to a mandatory private pension fund, while those aged 36-45 had the option to do so.
“Romanians realized at the last minute that if they do not express their own option, the state will chose for them,” according to the Manager of insurer Aviva Grup Romania, Shah Rouf.
Those who have not joined a pension fund by January 17, when the campaign ended, will be randomly assigned to a pension fund.
