"Photo cameras represent some 10 percent of total sales. We register a 300 percent year-on-year increase on this segment," said Radu Apostolescu, General Manager and shareholder of eMAG.ro. "We estimate the digital photo camera market will total 190,000 units in 2007. eMAG will sell some 20,000 cameras and have a 10-20 percent share of the Romanian camera market," he added. The company posted total sales worth €16.5 million in the first quarter of 2007. The best-sold brands were Canon, Sony, Fujifilm, Panasonic, and HP. "Sales of these brands tripled year-on-year. In the first quarter of this year, these five brands brought the company €2 million," Apostolescu said.
eMAG officials feel that photo cameras are easy to sell over the Internet. "Sales of high optical zoom cameras and photo cameras with interchangeable lenses for professionals and semi-professionals are increasing," Apostolescu mentioned.
By the end of 2006, eMAG's net sales amounted to €35 million. eMAG was founded in 2001 and is managed by the Dante International and EMAG International companies, whose shareholders are Radu Apostolescu, Bogdan Vlad, Dan Teodorescu, and Gabriel Dumitrescu.
eMag's main competitors in terms of the largest number of online only stores on the market are PCFun, PCGarage, and MarketOnline. Offline players, such as Flamingo, Diverta, Domo, and Depozitul de Calculatoare, also have developed online sections.
