The Golden Tulip hotel chain posted a 9-11 percent drop in occupancy rate in the first quarter of this year, due to the economic downturn, but the company’s countrywide expansion plans indicate a doubling in the accommodation capacity in the coming 10 years, according to Paul Marasoiu, Regional Manager for Romania, Moldova, and Bulgaria of Golden Tulip Hotels, Inns&Resorts.

A sharper decline in the occupancy rate, of up to 18-20 percent, was registered in April, due to the two Easter holidays, Catholic and Orthodox, which were one week apart, and the economic crisis.

“Investments in the hotel field will rebound sharply as of 2011, and capacity existing in Romania requires at least a doubling in the coming 10 years, of course with the necessary judgment regarding regional needs, the development of new tourist areas and coherent criteria and rules,” the company official said.
