Romania had the sixth largest budget deficit in the European Union in the first four months of 2008, of €7 billion, 16 percent higher than in the same period last year, according to data from the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat.
Romania’s trade deficit rose due to a 17 percent increase in exports and 16 percent imports. The export of goods and services reached €10.7 billion from January-April 2008, while imports amounted to €17.8 bln in the same period. Exports in May totaled €2.95 bln, 19.4 percent higher than in the same month in 2007, while imports went up 19 percent, to 4.7 bln.
