“Most companies do not plan to make changes regarding their number of employees. On the other hand, the number of companies which said they intend to recruit personnel is much higher than that of firms that say they will lay off staff,” said Ioana Tot, Senior Consultant of the ConsulTeam Romania recruitment company, Mercer’s local partner.

Other measures considered by Romanian companies include, according to the Mercer study, temporary or collective layoffs, externalizing support services, such as IT, accountancy, and personnel management.

PricewaterhouseCoopers Romania consulting company forecasts a 10 percent salary rise in the private sector in 2009. Ruxandra Stoian, Manager within PricewaterhouseCoopers Romania, said that there will no longer be “star-positions” which automatically benefit from salary rises. “The first half of year will be marked by a moderation of salary rises and a stand-by attitude of companies, not by extreme measures,” Stoian added.
