Austrian steel producer Voestalpine, interested in investing over €5.5 billion in a steel plant close to the Black Sea, will sign a memorandum with Bulgaria on September 8, according to the company’s spokesman, Peter Shiefer. He said Bulgaria is willing to build an industrial park for Voestalpine.

Four countries are candidates for the Austrian group’s steel plant - Romania, Bulgaria, Turkey and Ukraine. Ukraine was the first country to sign the memorandum with Voestalpine.

“The memorandum with Romania does not have a date for signing, the same as Turkey. Problems with the land are not yet solved and the acquisition is a difficult process,” said Shiefer.

Voestalpine is interested in some 600 hectares near the Black Sea close to the south-eastern town of Agigea. Voestalpine announced in July its intention to pay laand owners in the area 5 percent of the plots value, to make sure they do not increase prices.
