PSD demands a presidential revote

PSD’s Chairman and Băsescu’s opponent in the second round of presidential elections, Mircea Geoană, said he is convinced that he won the elections, but the results were vitiated by the “infernal fraud machine” of the Democratic Liberal Party (PDL), which supported Băsescu. On the other hand, PDL’s Vice Chairman, Adriean Videanu, said that PSD is acting as a “desperate party.”

Before the contestation was submitted to the Constitutional Court, PSD’s Secretary General, Liviu Dragnea, accused PDL of a “huge fraud operation,” saying that the demand for a revote will be supported by a “truckload of documents” to prove the fraud. He added that all types of fraud were used. “We are talking about electoral bribes, reporting which was modified after leaving the voting offices of the County Electoral Bureaus, falsified IDs, people who voted more than once, and electoral tourism,” said Dragnea. “We are convinced that Romanians elected Mircea Geoană as President of Romania, but Traian Băsescu’s state apparatus is fraudulently attempting to make him the President of Romania for a second term,” said Dragnea on Monday.

Former Minister of Internal Affairs, Dan Nica said that over 136,000 votes were subject to fraud in the second round of presidential elections, according to PSD data.

The liberal democrats claim that PSD is unable to admit defeat. PDL’s Chairman, Emil Boc, said that the attitude of the social-democrats is unjustified.

“Mircea Geoană considered himself winner on 6 December, asking for a civilized transfer of power. The reports from the voting centres are signed by the representatives of all political parties, including those of PSD. If they had something to contest, their representative from the voting centre would have done so, and would not have signed the report,” PDL’s Chairman added. Traian Băsescu obtained 50.33 percent of Romanian votes, according to data provided by BEC, following the count of votes in 99.95 percent of the voting centres. According to final BEC data, the presence at voting stations in the second round of elections was 58 percent.

Băsescu failed twice to push through a replacement for the government headed by Emil Boc, which collapsed on 13 October. If the President is unable to gain parliamentary support for a third Prime Minister designate, he is expected to call for new parliamentary elections.
