EC: “Banks are disappointing consumers”

More than 70 percent of lenders operating on the Romanian market, that were included in the study, had to provide additional information or clarify the information posted on their Web sites.

According to the report, within the EU, Romania is in the middle of a ranking regarding costs related to a bank account. Thus, the average annual price paid by a Romanian client is €83. Italy ranks first, with €253, and Bulgaria – last, with €27.

A Eurobarometer survey in 2008 showed that in Romania 33 percent of consumers have difficulties comparing bank offers for current accounts. “Banks are disappointing consumers. There is extensive proof of violation of basic principles of the relationship with consumers, with problems ranging from complex prices to hidden fees and unclear and incomplete information,” the European Commissioner for Consumer Protection, Meglena Kuneva, said.
