Restructuring the energy sector: an equation with even more unknowns

While one week ago, Minister of Economy Adriean Videanu, was talking about private management for the two state-owned energy giants, and said he would recommend this to the government, yesterday, the State Secretary within the Ministry of Economy, Tudor Serban, responsible for the energy sector, stated something entirely different.

“When we said we wanted private management for the two companies, we meant management based on private principles, not management in the form of bringing other people from London to show us how stupid we are,” Serban said. He added that the managers of the two companies will be Constantin Balasoiu, current General Manager of CEN Craiova, supported by the Democratic-Liberal Party (PD-L), and Mihai David, member of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) and General Manager of Hidroelectrica. Later on, Serban said that the two will coordinate the activities of the two companies until new management is appointed.

The emergency ordinance regarding the creation of the two giants is to be drawn up and adopted by year-end. “As of 1 January 2010, the two national energy companies will be operational on paper, but we can talk about their real functioning as of 2012,” the State Secretary said.
