At the Romenvirotec Environment Product and Technology Fair, Borbely announced that 45,000 cars older than 10 years have been scrapped so far. Out of the same number of vouchers received for scrapping, 11,429 have been approved by the Environment Fund Administration and have been used to buy 4,079 new cars, according to Mediafax.
“2,477 out of the 4,079 cars were made in Romania,” Borbely said and added he was satisfied with the huge success of the program’s 2010 edition.
The minister said some 50,000 new vouchers would be printed in the following days and distributed to scrapping companies all over the country.
Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc said Wednesday that the Government has assigned an additional 195 million lei (EUR1=RON4.0801) for the 2010 clunkers program.
The scrapping bonus was kept at RON3,800 and the Government initially said it plans to scrap 50,000 up to 60,000 old cars.
Romania’s 2010 clunkers program set off on February 18, after the Government relaunched the campaign for the scrapping of old cars. Under the new program, one owner can scrap multiple cars and receive multiple vouchers.
In 2009, Romanians scrapped 32,327 old cars.
