While industry and trade bounce back, retail worsens

Romania’s trade deficit narrowed by 58.5 percent in September compared to the corresponding month in 2008, to €1.055 billion. This decline is due to the fact that imports dropped more than twice as fast as exports. Computed in euro, imports fell 34 percent in September, to nearly €3.65 bln, while exports dropped 13.1 percent, to €2.59 bln. This means that Romania’s trade deficit narrowed for the 12th month in a row.

But if the declines in industry and international trade are slowing, local trade is not registering the same trend. Thus, net retail sales plunged 13.9 percent in September compared to the ninth month in 2008, mainly due to lower fuel and non-foodstuff sales. In August, the decline was of 12.1 percent.
