The decline was even sharper in March, up to 64.8 percent, ranking Romania fifth among countries which registered a drop in the number of registrations.

On the whole, the European market posted a 17.1 percent annual decline in Q1, to 3.3 million units, while the drop in March was of only 9.1 percent, to 1.4 mln units. On the local market, 8,124 new cars were registered in March, down 64.8 percent year-on-year.

The Romanian market ranked 16th in the European Union in terms of size in the first quarter of 2009 and 17th in March.
