Romania registered an all-time ESI index (64.3) low in March, but a moderate rebound followed in April. Most European countries posted increases in confidence in May, excepting Romania, Spain, the Czech Republic, Bulgaria, and Cyprus, according to the monthly report by the European Commission. On the other hand, Hungary, Slovenia, Denmark, and Portugal registered increases of more than 10 points compared to April.
Retail, services, and the industry raised the EU average, while the construction sector continued to drop. In Romania, consumer confidence returned to a positive trend, as did retail, but industry stagnated, and managers in trade and the construction sector have become more pessimistic.
