Alro Slatina to lay off 50 percent of employees

This is the second change in production targets. Last month, the producer’s main shareholder, Russian Vimetco group, announced it was considering a 25 percent drop in production for 2009.

A decision will be made this week, during a Board of Directors meeting.

“In recent months, aluminum prices plunged, while the global economy is heading into recession. We are one the first companies to react to worsening market conditions, by announcing lower production in China as of October. Currently, aluminum prices reached a level that compels us to consider new production reductions in Romania, to remain competitive and maintain the level of liquidities,” Alro President, Christian Wuest, said.

The number of employees could drop by 1,200-1,800 from a current 3,500.
