ANCOM: A new 3G license, from the spectrum unused by operators

A new 3G telecommunication license could become available by year-end, through the restructuring of the spectrum of frequencies used by current players providing 3G services in exchange of compensations, according to Catalin Marinescu, President of the National Authority for Management and Regulation in Communications of Romania (ANCOM). However, Orange and Vodafone, the two largest operators on the market, said that no frequencies will remain unused.

The stake of a new license is significant, as the mobile internet market is considered to have the fastest growth, although the telecom market is threatened by decline.

Telemobil, Orange, Vodafone, and RCS&RDS currently have 3G licenses on the telecom market. The only company without a 3G license is the Greek OTE group, operating on the mobile phone market through Cosmote.
