Red tags mark the buildings in danger of collapsing during a powerful earthquake. Even though request on the market is very high and prices have seen impressive increases in the past years, apartments in blocks built after the 1977 earthquake are far more sought after than those dating from before the devastating earthquake, in spite of the lower prices.
Real estate analysts have classified buildings according to the safety level: buildings with red tags, blocks built before 1977, those built between 1977 and 1990 and blocks built after 1990. The most secure buildings regarding the seismic risk are those constructed in the 1980s and after, partner manager of EuroMetropola agency, Monica Marin deems.
As many as 500 decaying buildings in Bucharest that are in danger of collapsing during a powerful earthquake have been clearly marked with red tags in March, as part of the reinforcement plan elaborated by the Ministry for Home Afairs and the Ministry of Transportation.
There are 383 very fragile buildings in Bucharest that could collapse during a rocking earthquake, according to the Ministry of Transportation. In 1977, a 7.4 magnitude earthquake centered near Bucharest killed over 1,500 people.
