Aurel Cazacu resigned due to Desintco scandal

“I will not leave this field [Ed. n. - military industry], because this is what I have been doing for 20 years, but I will provide more details at the beginning of September. This came as a surprise to me [Ed. n. - the Minister’s request], because my leaving the ministry was out of the question. I am good at trading weapons, this was my job,” the former General Manager told Business Standard yesterday.

Cazacu said that the company, of which his daughter owned five percent, “has nothing to do with the military industry.”

“Desintco was made to organize exhibits and identify business opportunities in the civil area, and had nothing to do with the military industry,” Cazacu said.

Desintco SRL’s shareholders were Romeo Oiţă, President of the Security Service Employers Association, with 30 percent, Mircea Băsescu with 30 percent, Cristian Geamănu, Vice President for Eastern Europe of General Defence Co USA, with 30 percent, Ion Eftimie Sandu, a reserve general, with five percent, and Maria Cristina Cazacu, with five percent. Geamănu told Business Standard yesterday that, following the scandal, Mircea Băsescu and Maria Cristina Cazacu quit the Desintco business.
