Barroso: EC may trigger safeguard owing to Romania’s agricultural shortcomings

The document showed insufficient progress in reforming the agriculture industry which may lead to the EC activating the safeguard clause. However, Barroso pointed out that the EC does not want to take such action, unless it is absolutely necessary.

He also said authorities should improve the way they spend European funds allotted to agriculture. The official urged the government to focus on agriculture seriously, to avoid measures taken against the country.

Barroso noted that, generally, EC representatives are satisfied with the country’s progress following its accession to the bloc at the beginning of the year.
