During a TV show broadcast on Monday by Realitatea TV, the President stressed that Romania’s future Prime Minister must succeed in negotiating a parliamentary majority in order to benefit from legitimacy. Basescu did not exclude the possibility of a “major coalition.”
“It is difficult, even impossible to accept that a Prime Minister can manage with a minority government in this time of crisis,” added Basescu.
The President also indicated that he is bound by the constitution to appoint a Prime Minister. “Obviously he and I will have a serious discussion, and I will require him to form a government which will be strongly supported by Parliament,” said Basescu.
Romania’s President said that the country’s priorities include the health and education sectors, economic solutions for banks to resume financing, and the highway and environmental programs, and he hopes that the future Prime Minister’s priorities will be in line with these.
