BNR keeps its money in time deposits in banks abroad

BNR's demand deposits registered a slight drop while time deposits increased by more than half in 2006 compared to 2005. Time deposits owned by BNR total RON 34 billion (€10 billion), with RON 22 billion (€6.5 billion) kept abroad.

On 31 December 2006, its demand deposits rose to RON 4.17 billion (€1.23 billion), most of which (RON 4.13 billion/€1.22 billion) with the Bank of International Settlements (BIS). The remaining demand deposits, worth €6.4 million, are held by German central bank Bundesbank, whose level dropped significantly from the €15.3 million at the end of 2005.

BNR has deposits worth RON 13.4 million in Japanese Yen (€4 million) with the Bank of Japan, down almost four times from its 31 December 2005 level. Romania's central bank placed £335,000 (€500,000) with the Bank of England, a deposit which has been reduced some 20 times from its initial £6.6 million (€10.5 million) at the end of 2005.

One of BNR's time deposits is with the central bank of the Netherlands (DNB), an overnight deposit of €86.6 million and another with the Federal Reserve Bank in New York, worth $80.7 million (€58.4 million).
