Boc: A financing agreement is possible with the EC, without IMF

Attending the launch of the annual report by the Romanian Academic Society (SAR) on the budgetary and financial crisis and the rule of law, Boc further declared that a possible agreement with the European Commission or IMF will be announced in two weeks. According to Ionut Popescu, the Prime Minister’s advisor and former Minister of Finance, a possible accord with IMF would not involve provisions as strict as those relating to previously contracted agreements. “We should not view IMF as rigid, as imposing a salary freeze or a rise in taxes. We can take the example of Hungary to convince ourselves that they are now much more flexible,” added Popescu.

Mircea Geoana, President of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) declared yesterday that he prefers a loan from the EU than one from the international fund, due to the drastic conditions imposed by the latter on the social plan. “Remembering the relationship with IMF still makes my skin crawl. Their conditions are very harsh, with a very powerful social impact and significant constraints. A loan without the Monetary Fund would be preferable,” said Geoana.
