Bucharest ranks 9th in terms of retail space in a list of 13 top cities analyzed by Regatta real estate consulting company, with 128 sqm per 1,000 inhabitants. Five malls are currently operating in Bucharest.
Pitesti, some 70 kilometers south of Bucharest, ranks second, with 375 sqm per 1,000 inhabitants, followed by Constanta, in southeastern Romania, with 288 sqm per 1,000 inhabitants.
With several mall projects announced countrywide, Bucharest is not expected to join top-ranked cities in the coming years.
“There is currently a total of 855,313 sqm of rentable space in the 13 largest cities in terms of inhabitants,” said Regatta analyst, Dragos Radu. In the coming three to five years, the density of mall space per 1,000 inhabitants is to triple in these cities.
