The value of the cancer drug market amounts to RON 855 million (some €205.7 mln, computed at an exchange rate of RON 4.156/€1), making up 11 percent of the total medication market.
Meanwhile, the antibiotic market continues to lose ground, registering an increase of a mere 15.4 percent.
The largest segment of the pharmaceutical market, the cardiovascular medicine sector, which makes up one fifth of the market, soared 19.2 percent, slightly below the market’s general average.
The digestive system medication market, the second-largest in the pharma sector, making up 13.9 percent of the total, amounted to RON 273 mln (some €65.7 mln) in the first quarter of this year, up 19.1 percent in the past 12 months. “This is a complicated and a very competitive sector,” said Cegedim’s General Manager, Petru Craciun. The Sanofi Aventis company is market leader, with sales worth €31 million, followed by Novo Nordisk, leader on the world insulin market, and GSK, each with sales worth some €20 mln.
The volume of analgesics sold on the local market amounted to €70 million in 2007, but the market fell to €65 mln the following year. Zentive is market leader, with sales worth €31 mln in 2008, followed by the U.S. Eli Lilly company, with €26 mln in sales.
