Carrefour Romania to hire 4,000 to sustain its expansion
At present, Carrefour is carrying out a massive recruiting campaign for the opening of its Suceava store, for which it will hire some 450 employees.

“For each new store we will open this year, we will hire some 500-600 persons. It is likely that national-level hiring will reach some 3,500-4,000 people by the end of 2008,” said Ana Dumitru, Human Resource Manager for Carrefour Romania.

By 2010, Carrefour and other major retail chains have announced major countrywide expansion. Carrefour’s HR Manager indicated that this is why the chain is engaged in massive recruiting and hiring, which will lead to a widening deficit in qualified personnel, and likely bring about a real personnel shortage in the coming years.

The main objectives of Carrefour’s HR Department in 2008 include the training of managerial teams for its new stores, through internal selection, and the reduction in the personnel flux in existing stores. Ana Dumitru explained that employees are tempted to migrate to other stores where short-term conditions are more attractive.

Fresh product positions are hardest to fill, including bakers, cooks, and butchers. Carrefour is attempting to identify long-term solutions to this problem by initiating partnerships with high schools and professional schools, and through internal training programs.

Carrefour is the third-largest retail group in Romania, with 7,000 employees in its 11 hypermarkets and central headquarters.
