On May 11 this year Bucharest Court ruled SRI must pay damages worth 50,000 lei in the controversial phone-tapping case to the oil mogul.
The court’s decision came after SRI’s lawyer said he must get acquainted with the new evidence submitted in the case by Patriciu’s lawyers.
Patriciu and Rompetrol sued the SRI after tape recordings of meetings between Patriciu and some of his business partners appeared in the media last April.
At the hearing on May 7, the businessman's lawyers declared Patriciu's calls were illegally tapped as no proof was provided showing that the Rompetrol CEO endangered national security.
Rompetrol also claimed that SRI accessed the company’s computer database to collect information about Patriciu and the company’s businesses.
Plaintiffs said that SRI tapped into private and job-related conversations of Patriciu and his employees during 1994-2005 while from 2003 to 2005 SRI had recorded the entire Rompetrol communication service.
