“A decline in GDP [gross domestic product] of more than eight percent was anticipated by a great deal of investors,” the Advisor to the Governor of the National Bank of Romania, Lucian Croitoru, told Business Standard yesterday.
Thus, in the first six months of this year, according to statistics, the current accounts of companies registered an increase of 13.5 percent compared to H1 2008. Also, foreign direct investments in Romania amounted to €2.47 billion in the first five months of this year, compared to €4.26 bln in the corresponding period in 2008.
Yesterday, government sources said that the new scenario considered for setting the revised macroeconomic framework, in the context of the first assessment of the stand-by agreement, indicates a drop in economy of 8-8.5 percent in 2009. “The peak of this crisis will be reached this year, most likely in the coming quarter, and we will witness a rebound in the final three months of 2009,” Croitoru said.
