E.ON Romania to temper layoffs in 2010 and 2011, following 5,000 layoffs in past 4 years

“We will be reducing the number of employees next year as well, by various methods, such as externalization, establishment of new branches, and continued optimization of business in Romania. At the end of December 2009, the E.ON Romania group will have 7,300 employees,” according to a declaration in a press conference yesterday by Frank Hajdinjak, General Manager of E.ON Romania. In a recent interview for Business Standard, Hajdinjak said that he was on the verge of laying off 100 employees, following the voluntary departure from E.ON companies of over 1,000 employees since the beginning of the year.

E.ON carried out such voluntary resignation programs ever since it took control of the former Distrigaz Nord and Electrica Moldova companies that employed over 12,000 in Romania.

According to the E.ON official, the group’s financial situation is not “rosy,” as cumulated losses amount to RON 786 million (some €190 mln) from distribution and supply activities of gas and electricity on the local market, due to expenses in 2007 and 2009 not being included in rates approved by the National Agency for Energy Regulation (ANRE).
