Employers and trade unions say government’s labor measures are useless

The measures are part of a crisis plan drafted by the government and announced by Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu this week. However, both employers and trade unions say the measures are useless and that these will not foster economic growth.

Trade union confederation Cartel Alfa’s Vice President, Petru Dandea, said the plan to grant employers €1,000 for each unemployed person hired could only be useful as long as companies are not impacted by the crisis and forced to reduce operations. “For a small company, such funds could be of assistance to pay the employee for several months, but the chance that this measure is effective is small, given that many companies are forced to lay off employees,” Dandea said.

Maria Grapini, President of the Light Industry Employers’ Union Federation (FEPAIUS), said that the measure should be approved after a crisis, not while it is ongoing. “Who is creating jobs and employing personnel, when everyone is reducing operations and laying people off. I am upset with the Prime Minister, because these are not the measures we were expecting from the government to limit the crisis effect,” Grapini added.
