The Romanian leu lost 288 units yesterday, while the average drop since the beginning of the week amounted to 511 units. In yesterday's session, the exchange rate exceeded RON 3.4/€1 at 2:30 p.m. (RON 3.4030-3.4090/€1).

In 2007, the top exchange rate of the euro against the leu was registered on January 26, at RON 3.4106/€1. The Romanian currency's evolution varies from that of other regional currencies, which registered slight appreciation.

Market operators say that this downward correction of the euro-leu exchange rate is based on the perception of investors of Romanian economic developments based on the report by rating agency Standard & Poor's, which highlighted the discrepancy between fiscal policy and external imbalance, particularly the current account deficit.
