Euroclinic has 12,000 insured and subscribed clients. The private health insurance market slightly exceeds €10 million, with a little over 30,000 insured persons. Some 30 percent of the private insurance market belongs to Eureko, owner of Euroclinic, which attempted to sell the hospital in 2008, but failed, and the insurer subsequently decided to invest in a network of medical clinics.
“Strategically, we had to decide where to position ourselves and, as a group, we opted for the premium segment. It was a strategic decision at first, as it rather reflects the reality of costs,” explained Popa. The hospital has now broken even operationally, in the sense that it is no longer accumulating losses. Popa added that although the niche on which the hospital has positioned itself is very narrow, they wanted excellence. In general, the investment in a hospital is initially major, and the first years are subject to losses of this type, unlike a clinic, where one can recoup an investment in 2-3 years.
The number of clients could double this summer if the Ministry of Health proposed minimum package of medical services is adopted.
Last year, Euroclinic signed a contract with the National Health Insurance House, so that 40 percent of the costs of an operation can be deducted by the public system. The company is expecting turnover worth €10 million this year.
