Expur considering Urziceni oil factory closure

The measure will only affect factory employees. Workers at the company’s two silos are to keep their jobs.

This is the fourth edible oil factory closed recently in Romania. U.S. giant Bunge already halted operations at three Romanian production units. Interviewed by Business Standard, Expur General Manager Peter Tagge said that the oil factory closure is indeed being considered. „We are analyzing the situation. As we can no longer ensure the soy raw material from Romania and imports are not profitable, our production operations are affected,“ Tagge added.

Sources close to the company told Business Standard that the trade union representing workers had been notified last week about the plan by shareholders to cease operations. The factory produces oil by processing soy beans. As the use of genetically engineered soy was recently banned, the company imported some 25,000 tons of soy, leading to losses worth $1.8 billion.
