Fiat plans to invest in Romania

Italy’s ambassador in Romania, Mario Cospito, confirmed for Business Standard that Fiat is interested to invest here. Market sources said the investment value and the location of the future production unit are yet to be decided.

The company brought its Ferrari brand to Romania this year. Representatives of Forza Rossa, the company that imports Ferrari, said they know Fiat plans to come to Romania, as it did to all countries with growth potential, but did not say when it is likely to happen.

Fiat also owns Lancia, Alfa Romeo and Iveco brands.

The President of Romanian Automotive Manufacturers and Importers Association (APIA), Ernest Popovici, said the Romanian market could sustain a third major producer. “There is a great paradox in Romania. Although the auto industry lacks personnel, the unemployment rate is not zero,” said Popovici.

French group Renault is the top producer in Romania, through local manufacturer Automobile Dacia. U.S. carmaker Ford last year purchased Automobile Craiova and is set to launch production in Romania next year.
