Auchan network operator, MGV Distri-Hiper, posted a record 636 percent increase. Real ranks second, with 293 percent annual increase in turnover. Kaufland is third, with 162 percent growth, while Plus Discount posted 125 percent increase in turnover.
Retail has a significant growth rate in Romania, with hypermarkets registering the highest increase.
In spite of lower growth in business, Plus Discount was the most profitable of the four retail chains, with net earnings worth €83.7 million. Real was the least profitable, with losses of €47.4 million, due to network expansion.
The top retailer in Romania in terms of turnover is Metro Cash&Carry, with business worth €1.59 billion in 2007, 11.3 percent higher than in 2006. Selgros Cash&Carry, part of German Rewe group, ranks second, with €821 million worth of business, 27 percent higher year-on-year. Carrefour Romania ranks third, with €791.3 million, 33 percent higher than in 2006.
