French retailer Carrefour could absorb the Plus Discount store network, Business Standard writes
The Plus network counts 50 units in Romania and could reach 70 stores by April 30, 2008. The local competitors are miniMax Discount, Kaufland, XXL Megadiscount and Penny Market. Carrefour also bought the Plus network in Spain this summer, for 200 million euros, according to El Pais daily. The Carrefour network in Spain, called Dia, included 2,806 stores in 2006.

Carrefour Romania owns ten hypermarkets countrywide and saw sales of 609 million euros last year, a 39 percent hike from 2005. The company estimates sales to increase 10-15 percent this year. Carrefour invested more than 250 million euros in its Romanian units since entering the market in 1998. Carrefour recently absorbed the Artima store network for 55 million euros. Artima operates 21 stores in western Romania, totaling 21,000 square meters of sale surface.
