Based on this decision, the Transgaz state-owned gas transportation company will be able to supply consumers on a priority basis, according to Economy Minister Adriean Videanu. As of today, state-owned energy producers, which are compelled to organize tenders for fuel acquisition, are now allowed to engage in direct negotiations for fuel supplies. However, Romania’s situation is not critical, as the country has its own natural gas production, stocks of natural gas, and the possibility of using alternative fuels, such as heating oils and coal, to produce electricity and thermal energy. “We are small, this is not our war. We must hold our breath until others choke,” the Manager of Deloitte Financial Advisory Services, Valeriu Binig, told Business Standard. According to Francisc Toth, General Manager of Romgaz natural gas producer, Romania will not be subject to a natural gas shortage for 100 days, and households will not be affected by the halt in gas imports from Russia. However, the stoppage will impact on major consumers. “People do not need to worry, because Romania still has natural gas for the coming 100 days, and after that the winter is practically over,” Toth said. Gas deliveries from Russia to Romania through Isaccea 2 (southeastern Tulcea County) amount to 4.7 million cubic meters per day, and make up two thirds of total imports. The remaining 2.5 million cubic meters are delivered through the Mediesul Aurit station. (T.V.)
