“It is too early to estimate the sales volume in Romania, but given the U.S. experience, we hope to register a similar success in Europe,” the General Manager of GSK Consumer Healthcare, Adrian Samson, said.
The product was launched in 2007 in the U.S. and made some €125 million in sales by the end of the second quarter of 2008, he added.
According to GSK estimates, some seven million people are overweight in Romania.
GSK was authorized to sell the product in the European Union, which allows the company to launch it in all 27 member states. This is the first OTC diet pill ever approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and by the European Commission.
The drug targets adults exceeding a certain weight, calculated based on a body mass index.
