How players split last year’s gas market

As concerns internal gas production, the leader last year was Petrom, the largest Romanian company, which is part of the Austrian OMV group portfolio. According to ANRE data, Petrom produced 49.3 percent of the total natural gas, ahead of state-owned Romgaz, which provided 48.4 percent of total production. By comparison, Petrom had a 46.77 percent production quota in 2007, while Romgaz’s quota was 51.3 percent. The remaining production was shared by five players.

This was a good year for domestic natural gas producers when considering increased consumption (to 17.3 billion cubic meters from 16.3 cubic meters), as well as the explosion of the price of imported natural gas, which made up for 28 percent of the consumption ratio, similar to 2007. Of the 17.3 billion cubic meters of gas consumed in 2008, some 4 billion were used by the population, while the remainder went for industrial consumption.
