How the crisis has affected private medical service consumer behavior

“On the retail segment (Ed. n. individuals who pay per medical service), we registered an increasing number of customers, although the trend is limited to strictly necessary medical investigations,” according to a statement for Business Standard by Vassilis Chaniotis, General Manger of Medsana. The network makes some 50 percent of its turnover from retail, while the rest comes from medical subscriptions offered by companies to their employees. Medsana reported a 20 percent rise in both turnover and retail in the first half of the year. “As concerns corporate clients, we have noticed stagnation in the number of existing subscribers and a reorientation in some cases to subscriptions with fewer services,” added Chaniotis, who went on to say that his company expects a drop in the number of corporate customers.

Sergiu Negut, Chief Executive Officer of Unirea Medical Center (CMU), indicated that while there was some reticence on the part of consumers in the first half of the this year, the market has subsequently bounced back. He said that the changes CMU felt on the corporate segment is due to a drop in employment, with small companies most affected. At present, 30 percent of CMU’s business comes from retail, although this is on the rise.
