Ikea Romania: The labor market trend is a “recession psychosis”

“We are witnessing a series of contradictory phenomena: on the one hand, a recent study indicates that more than half of Romanians want to change their job or qualification. On the other hand, the lower level of personnel turnover in the past months leads us to believe that employees are holding on to their jobs,” said Lorincz.

In 2009, Ikea will focus its strategy on raising productivity, in response to the company’s needs and not to market conditions, added the company official. “We could take advantage of the crisis to recruit staff at lower salaries, but we prefer to attract skilled employees than lower salaries,” Lorincz said.

Ikea Romania currently has 500 employees. The company registered business worth €104.7 million in 2008, with highest sales in September. The Bucharest furniture and decoration market is estimated to be worth €500 million, and its main players include Ikea, Mobexpert, Elvila, kika, and Staer.
