Average civil liability insurance for a person’s death is under €4,000, even if the maximum threshold is €750,000, according to data from insurance brokers. The limit for material damages is €150,000.
Moral damages paid to victims amount to €15,000 in , €19,800 in , and €41,000 in . In 2006, a mere 1.64 percent of total paid damages in were for persons, compared to 50 percent paid in other European countries.
Traffic police data reports that there were 8,203 accidents in 2007 involving victims registered in , in which 2,712 people died, and 6,779 were seriously injured. The total number of victims was 9,000.
According to the Insurance Supervisory Commission, in 2012 the limit of compensation should reach €1 million for material damages, and €5 mln for corporal damages, in conformity with the European calendar. “Each insurer may set a much higher limit than the minimum established. A judge may quantify the damages at a value other than that set,” added Bogdan Andriescu, President of the National Union of Insurance Brokerage and Consultancy Companies in Romania (UNSICAR). He explained that in this way “the client may acquire an extension to the amount insured, to ensure that he does not end up paying this money from his own pocket.”
