President Traian Basescu suspended Pacuraru on Monday, after he was impeached by the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA) on bribery charges. Pacuraru is a member of the ruling National Liberal Party (PNL). Quarrels between the President and the Liberals, led by Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, are part of Romania’s day-to-day political life.
Pacuraru said the DNA file against him is solely “based on suspicions.” He told a press conference yesterday that reasons for his suspension include his decision to restructure the ministry. Furthermore, the minister added that he hopes to return to his position shortly.
The Prime Minister must appoint an interim Labor minister for the period of Pacuraru’s suspension.
