Lack of investments drives up unemployment in industry

The ANOFM rate indicates a 1.1 percentage point rise compared to February 2008, and a 0.4 percentage point increase from January 2009.

Businesspeople indicated that unemployment will continue its upward trend in the coming months, and that Romania’s industry is the most affected sector. The lack of orders, and failure to apply the government’s €10 billion investment program are only two of the reasons which led to the closing of many businesses in industry, and implicitly, to a rise in unemployment.

“Industrial orders fell by one third recently. At the same time we have not seen the investments announced by the government, that €10 billion program. We have seen no project within that program. That program is a secret agent, nobody knows anything about it. Where are the projects from the investment program,” Cristian Parvan, Secretary General of the Romanian Businesspeople Association (AOAR), told Business Standard.
