The referendum ends his 30-day suspension by Parliament, based on accusations of abuse of office. Basescu victoriously addressed supporters at his Democratic Party headquarters shortly after public opinion poll institutions announced preliminary results of the vote. “The estimate - 75 percent in favor of the President, and 25 percent for the 322 parliamentarians [E.n.: who voted to suspend President Basescu on 19 April] is clear proof of the choice of the Romanian people,” said Basescu.The President’s political adversaries received the news of the vote with resignation and disappointment. “Considering that five parties joined forces against me, the percentage they obtained is small compared to the effort they expended,” said President Basescu, adding that he would respect their effort as required by the democratic process. Basescu also appealed publicly to Parliament to accept the result of the popular vote. Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu, who has been engaged in a political feud with President Basescu, said that Romanians have given Traian Basescu a second chance, adding that he is committed to collaborating with the President and the government.
