The Liesti factory became part of Lemarco’s portfolio in 2000, when the American Atlanta Corporation took over 50 percent of Lemarco’s shares. The Urziceni production capacity was acquired less than one year ago, and will initially produce a daily 800 tons, to reach 1,000 tons a day later. Lemarco invested €3 million in the Urziceni factory, according to company officials.

Lemarco signed a partnership with Zaharul Calarasi in 2007 to produce the quota allocated to both factories, based on European regulations, in a single unit, in order to cut costs. Sugar producers began to operate according to the European quota system as of 2007, which means that each factory can produce a limited quantity, and excesses are charged €278.3 per ton. Romania negotiated with the European Union for a total quota of 109,000 tons of sugar from beets and 329,000 tons of raw sugar.

The firm posted RON 233 million (€69.8 mln) in net sales in 2007. The domestic sugar market is worth over €250 mln, and its main players include Agrana Romania, Zaharul Oradea, Lemarco, and Zaharul Corabia.
