Scott A. Harris, President for Europe of the American Lockheed Martin group, the world’s largest producer of military equipment, in Romania one day before the NATO summit, declared exclusively for Business Standard that he expects the value of contracts in Romania to reach half a billion dollars in the near future. “We have been in Romania for some ten years and have done excellent business in that time. The value of contracts concluded here amounts to hundreds of millions of dollars,” added Harris.
The American company announced at the beginning of March that it had concluded a contract with the Romanian Ministry of Defense to supply 17 radar systems worth $121.8 million, in which the local partner is the UTI Systems group, controlled by businessman Tiberiu Urdareanu. Lockheed Martin has another contract in Romania since 2005, worth $30 mln, whose service provider is Romaero, for the maintenance of Romanian army C-130 Hercules aircraft. It is likewise involved in an auction for the supply of a multi-purpose plane for the Romanian army, the most important arms contract in Romania’s history, whose value is €4 billion, and which has attracted all the main international military equipment suppliers.
