Pharmacists rejected in July the Ministry of Health's proposal to impose a 20 percent extra charge for imported drugs, saying that this would lead to bankruptcies among drug stores. Health Minister Eugen Nicolaescu on August 23 said that starting November 1 this year prices for imported drugs will decrease by15 percent.
Elsewhere, family doctors in late July said offering 90 percent discounts for drugs given to pensioners would block the Romanian health system because of insufficient funds and sick people would not have access to the discounted drugs.
Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu previously said the government wants to grant 90 percent discounts on drugs for pensioners starting in 2008. The 90 percent deduction depends on implementing a software that would allow the Health House to manage expenditures.
