The Chamber of Deputies will meet in an extraordinary session on 13 August to decide if it will approve penal proceedings against two former Social Democratic Party (PSD) Ministers, Miron Mitrea and Adrian Nastase. The session was convened based on a request by President Traian Basescu, as a sign of good faith to the European Union following its latest report in which Romania was criticized for not doing enough in the area of fighting high-level corruption.
At the end of yesterday’s parliamentary session, Liberal Chairman Bogdan Olteanu, indicated that by convening the extraordinary session prior to the decision by the Constitutional Court, the head of state risks the decision on penal proceedings against Mitrea and Nastase requiring only two thirds of the Chamber of Deputies, which will be in the favor of the two.
