In 2007, ECB’s President had a base salary of €345,252, according to a financial report by the Frankfurt-based institution, quoted by Bloomberg, which translates to a monthly salary of €27,771. Mugur Isarescu’s salary in 2007 amounted to some €90,000, according to his own declaration of wealth, about four times lower than Trichet. In fact, the BNR Governor’s salary is closer to that of Ben Bernanke, Governor of the U.S. Federal Reserve. Last year, Bernanke earned $191,300 (€130,000), while another central banker, Mervyn King, Governor of the Bank of England, made GBP 283,564 (€380,000) in 2007.
BNR’s Governor does not even lead in the region, as his salary is lower than all of his counterparts in Central and Eastern Europe. For instance, Andras Simor, Governor of the National Bank of Hungary, made HUF 7.4 million (€350,000), according to the Napi Gazdasag daily.
