Myth or reality: which are the best days for investing on the Stock Exchange?

The analysis is based on the BET index (which follows the evolution of the top 10 most liquid shares), since its launch in September 1997. During this time, the most profitable month for investors was January, with an average return of 6.32 percent, followed by April (some four percent), and May (3.2 percent).

On the other hand, the weakest month was March, with an average decline of 1.22 followed by September (-1.02 percent), and August (-0.94 percent). On the U.S. market, with whose evolution the local Stock Exchange is correlated on an almost daily basis lately, the best periods for the Dow Jones Industrial Average index have been, in the past 100 years, April and December, with average increases of 1.32 percent in each case, according to an analysis by Bespoke Investment Group.

However, the data regarding the evolution on the local Stock Market have low relevance, given the short history of the Romanian capital market.

“Thus, the calculations above do not mean that investors buying shares in January, for example, will be richer than other investors. Who had applied this strategy in 2009 would not have gained, at least to date: this year, January was the weakest month, with BET falling 22.34 percent,” Pasol said.

He added that the myths related to the capital market, such as “the Stock Exchange is bearish in the summer, because investors are on holiday,” have nothing to do with reality, a conclusion identified even by the analyzed data.
