Nokia's investments in the factory in Jucu, Cluj County (Western Romania), will trigger the creation of some 15,000 jobs, according to the mayor of Cluj, Emil Boc.The official told Realitatea TV he met with the representatives of the world's leading mobile phone manufacturer and these assured him further investments with the factory in Cluj will be made.
The Nokia officials said the first ready-to-use phones will be ready by February 9 this year. Boc saluted the intervention of Jose Manuel Durao Barroso, the head of the European Commission, who rejected the requirements of the European socialists for stopping the relocation of one of Nokia's production units from Germany to Romania.
Nokia's decision led to a wave of protests amongst both German workers and politicians. The mobile phone producer announced it wanted to close the factory in Bochum (Germany) by mid 2008. This is one of the biggest one-off shifts of jobs from western to eastern Europe, as 2,300 German workers will lose their jobs.
